This past Saturday my dad, brother (Greg), and I decided to make the trek north to Milan Speedway in Milan, Tennessee to catch the Southern Regional Racing Series Super Latemodel event on the high bank ¼ mile nestled right off Graball Rd. We pulled in a couple hours ahead of time. I noticed the parking was full and several cars parked outside the pits, including Anthony Burroughs, Ronnie Lee Hollingsworth, and a couple others.
With 37 late models in the house, this looked to be an event to remember. Drivers in attendance were “Dangerous†Dane Dacus, “The Big Boss†Ross Camponovo, “The Animal†Jeff Taylor, “Right Foot†Ronny Lee Hollingsworth, “The Athens Agitator†Anthony Burroughs, Kelly “Bizkit†Hanvey, “The One Man Show†Jamie Elam. Also there, father and son combo Terry and Tanner English. I was VERY impressed with Tanner English who made his debut in a super late model the night before in Peduca, Kentucky. Tanner also raced his way into the main event through his B-Main, but mechanical woes kept him from racing the A-Main. I was also shocked to see my hero, The Legendary “Mississippi Flyer†Jerry Inmon. He still knows how to ‘stand on it’ with the big boys, but unfortunately, poor qualifying lap relegated him to the back of his B-Main and a one lane locked down racetrack prevented any passing, so Inmon was sent home.
They took the top 8 qualifier’s and locked them into the main event. Those drivers would include: Dane Dacus, Ronny Lee Hollingsworth, Tony Morris, Anthony Burroughs, Terry English, Chris Ragan, Ronald Dunn, and Byron Michael out of Indiana. Next they run four B-Mains with the top 14 cars and then they added three provisionals to round out the 25 car field.
From the drop of the green flag in the main event it was all Dane Dacus who started from the point. A lap 26 caution would regroup the field and give Burroughs, Hollingsworth, Morris and other another shot at Dacus. Dane proved to be the class of the field as he pulled 4 car lengths on the restart and never looked back as he cruised to a half track lead at the finish to claim the $5,000 to win prize money. Burroughs, Hollingsworth, Morris and Ragan rounded out the top 5. Terry English would come home 7th, Local shoes Jessie Bailey and Jamie Dacus in 12th and 17th, Jamie Elam was 13th, and Jeff Taylor was 21st.
With 15 cars signed in to do battle in the Street Stock class, only 6 finished as several cars pulled off, and Jacob Coleman flipped on the back stretch in his heat. Dave Crocker was making the high line work in the feature when he got collected in a crash coming off turn 2. The top 6 finishers are as follows: Don Bush, Jamie Nolen, Lee Trawick, Scott Davis, Ryan Sawyers, Randy Hargett. In the hummers, there were 14 cars, with three wide racing throughout the field it would be Mike McKinney taking the checkers in a caution free race. Michael Southerland, Dakota Berry, Michael Lumley, and Adam Elliot followed McKinney across the line.
With 18 cars in the pure street class the race Wyett Ashmore would take the win, Blake Ross second, followed by Roy Bedwell, Scott Howell, and Blake Hagan. In the hobby stock division several cautions flew throughout the event but when it was all said and done Eric Pinson would take the top spot and keep it, Rex Berry was second, with Mark Wilson, Jeff Melton, and Chad McDaniel in tow.
The open wheel modifieds would see 22 cars start the main event, Shane Akin stretched out to an early lead, with Bart Richardson in tow. At the races midway point it looked as if Richardson was going to make a charge for the lead, but Akin was tough around the bottom, and went on the win. Richardson was second, Jeff McWilliams third, Brandon Poppenheimer fourth, and Jason Sullivan was fifth. Ben Reed was 8th, Shane Stevens 9th, Jeff Taylor was 11th, and Jeff Howell was 12th.
This week I will be attending the USCS Sprint Cars Speedweeks round #1 at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Arkansas. We are also talking about attending event #3 Monday night at Clayhill Motorsports in Atwood, Tenn.
