WINS AT SHARON; #2 FOR KINNEY IN MODS; LASKEY REPEATS IN STOCKS; 12 Y.O. EUCKER STEALS 3RD ECONO MOD WIN; CREECH AGAIN IN MINIS

After a beautiful start, clouds increased by Saturday evening and showers rolled in from the west, but only sprinkles fell at Sharon Speedway allowing for the 11th straight racing program to be completed. Varis Vein Institute with locations in Howland and Brookfield, Ohio was the night’s presenting sponsor. It was also Pittsburgh Circle Track Club Night. Sharon celebrated Father’s Day as all fathers were admitted for just $7. 102 race cars filled the pit area.

Celebrating in the Hovis Auto & Truck Supply victory lane were Rex King.-Governor Insurance DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds, Dennis Lunger, Jr.-Barris Supply RUSH Late Models, Mike Kinney-Summit Racing Equipment Modifieds, Rod Laskey-Gibson Insurance Agency Stock Cars, Jacob Eucker-HTMA/Precise Racing Products Econo Mods, and Travis Creech-Deforest Used Parts Mini Stocks. A pair of bikes were given away to two lucky children thanks to King Bros. and Sharon Speedway.

In what looked like nearly a carbon copy of one week ago, Rex King held off a hard charging Jeremiah Shingledecker for the second straight week to capture his third DIRTcar Big-Block Modified win of the season in the 20-lap Governor Insurance Agency feature. “I had Johnny and Ken on the backstretch having a fit telling me to go low,” explained the veteran Bristolville, Ohio standout. “I figured I better go low and it worked out. I have to thank all of my sponsors, everyone at Sharon Speedway, and the fans- they’re great.”

It was a mad scramble on the opening lap with everyone trying to make an early move for track position. Tom Glenn took command at the start with fifth starting Ricky Richner finding his way past several competitors for second. King, who started sixth and was still sixth after lap one, made a hard charge to pass Eric Gabany, Shingledecker, and Bob Warren for third on lap two.

Lap three saw Richner power into the lead with King following as they dropped Glenn back to third. One lap later, Shingledecker made the pass for third. King wasted little time charging by Richner on lap four for the lead. Shingledecker then went at it with Richner. The duo raced side-by-side for three laps until Shingledecker slid under and past the New Yorker in turn two on lap seven

King had opened up a half-straightaway lead by the time Shingledecker got to second. A pair of cautions slowed action with eight and nine laps completed. In between, Rex King, Jr. and Jim Weller, Jr. were able to advance to fourth and fifth respectively past Gabany.

The last 11 laps went green-to-checkered. After King got away on the start, Shingledecker reeled the leader in on lap 13 and was right on King’s bumper on lap 15. Like one week ago, Shingledecker tried every move possible, but he had to settle for second. King’s margin of victory was 1.616 seconds for his 45th career win in the KMB Inc.-owned, GS Engine Power/Midway Garage Door/University Hospital-sponsored #65.

Shingledecker has now finished second or third in each of his last three starts. Richner’s third was his best of the season. King, Jr. and Weller traded fourth and fifth back and forth several times with King, Jr. winning out. Sixth through 10th were Gabany, Dave Murdick, Glenn, Jimmy Weller III and Rob Kristyak. Murdick and Weller, Jr. won the heat races.

After ending 2012 in victory lane and starting 2013 off with a bang winning two of the first three features, Dennis Lunger, Jr. hit somewhat of a slump, but Lunger was back at it Saturday night and returned to glory for his third 20-lap Barris Supply RUSH Late Model win.

“This is the other car that I won with early in the year and we haven’t raced it since,” revealed the 45-year-old Albion, Pa. driver. “We blew the other one up last week as I’m sure most people saw. We thought we’d give this one a shot and this one is good! I think I’m going to stay with this one for awhile. I was hoping for a couple wins here this year, but this is three now so I’m hoping for six and pass Will (Thomas). He’s a good buddy of mine and I just saw he took over second on the all-time win list here. My goal is to pass him so us two old guys can sit down there and joke about it.”

After a strong sophomore season, Matt Latta has really struggled to date this season. Following a sixth place effort Friday night in the Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC Touring Series event at McKean County Raceway, Latta bolted to the early lead. Latta set the pace for the first five circuits before a caution for a spin by Brian Booher after contact from Clay Ruffo.

Lunger started third and passed Josh Double on lap one for second. The caution was just what Lunger needed as on the ensuing restart, Lunger took command. Lunger would survive two more cautions as he took the checkered flag first by 1.902 seconds in the Schwartz Construction-owned, Schwartz Trucking/Choices Restaurant/English Tire/State Farm Insurance Chris Brecht-sponsored #71L. Lunger now has a commanding 49-point lead over defending champion Will Thomas III.

Latta’s second was clearly his best finish of the season as his prior best was a pair of fifth place finishes. The third position saw four different racers in Double, Rocky Kugel, Eric Wilson, and Thomas at one point lay claim to the spot, but in the end it was “Futures Cup” teenager Wilson getting the nod over Thomas, Double, and Kugel. Seventh through 10th were Jamie Wrightsman, Ruffo, Mike Anderson, and Booher. Heats were captured by Lunger and Thomas.

Mike Kinney has never been a big winner in the Modified division throughout the circuit, but Kinney could certainly be considered one of the most consistent racers that’s always near the front when the checkered flag waves. Kinney would like to change that and become more of a winner on a consistent basis and he’s well on his way. Kinney won last Saturday for his first win of the season, finished fourth in Wednesday’s UEMS event, and did it again on Saturday night winning the 15-lap Summit Racing Equipment feature.

“I want to thank Dave (Willoughby) and the crew here at Sharon,” expressed the 39-year-old Ashtabula, Ohio racer. “This is one the greatest tracks I’ve raced on. It’s always smooth. Thank God we always beat the weather so that’s great. My crew and I worked real hard the last couple days to make sure we got here and everything was right. They make this all happen and I can’t thank those guys enough.”

Jeff Hassay used his pole position start to take the early lead over newcomer Jackson Humanic. A five-car accident on lap two took out the third place car of Dwayne Clay. When racing resumed, seventh starting Jeff Johnson and sixth starting Kinney both disposed of Humanic for second and third respectively. Kinney drove under and past Johnson in turn four on lap four for second.

A caution for a spin by Bob Diver bunched up the field with three laps scored. On the ensuing restart, Kinney powered around Hassay in turns one and two for the lead. It was a lead that Kinney would never relinquish as the final 12 laps went non-stop. Kinney’s Racecar Fabricating/TJ Racing Transmission/Close Racing Supply/Arp’s Automotive/Flinbiu Graphics/Hoosier Tire-sponsored #3 won by 2.910 seconds over Johnson for his fourth career win.

Johnson, who finished second, trails by Kinney by 16 in the standings. Hassay’s third improved on his prior best finish of fifth back on opening night. Joe Gabrielson, who started eighth, passed Humanic on lap five to finish fourth. Rocky Kugel had a great run in fifth after starting 14th in just his second start in Randy Beck’s #357. Sixth through 10th were Humanic, Alan Dellinger, Mike Monreal, Ed Wilson, and Trevor Herr. Heat winners were Gabrielson and Johnson.

After competing for the Stock Car Championship last year for Bob Sloss, Rod Laskey has only made four starts this season- one for Sloss and three in his own car. Laskey though has made them count as he won his second of the season on Saturday night in the 15-lap Gibson Insurance to go along with a runner-up and a fourth place finish.

“The car wasn’t right in the heat race,” acknowledged the 37-year-old Oil City, Pa. driver. “It kept laying down in the middle of the turn. We tried to adjust the floats after the heat race. It’s better, but it’s still not right. It has a lot more in it. This is a 358 motor on pump gas. It has 10:1 compression. I’m trying to get away from the high dollar fuel. I love this place and this is the surface I love. I have to thank my mom and dad. It’s Father’s Day Weekend and this one is for dad.”

After two multi-car melees without a lap being scored, action settled down and 12 laps were run caution-free. Laskey moved to the front row after Jamie Scharba and Ron Yarab, Jr. were in involved in the second tangle. Laskey took charge immediately and only the caution with two laps to go slowed his dominating performance over Brian Carothers.

Laskey still pulled away in the two-lap shootout to win by 1.490 seconds Randy’s Auto Sales/Anderson Physical Therapy/The Works/Les Frickshun #1R. Carothers struggled after the caution as defending champion Tim Burns, 10th starting Bob McCann, and point leader Mike Clark all got by to finish second through fourth respectively. Carothers faded to fifth. Clark and Burns copped the heat races over the regular season high of 18 cars.

Twelve-year-old Jacob Eucker out-dueled teenager Jeremy Double to win a caution-filled 15-lap Econo Mod feature. The two youngsters went at it as they have several times this year with Eucker getting by on a late restart to capture his third HTMA/Precise Racing Products feature! “I know Jeremy likes the bottom and I just tried to hold him off described,” the Hartford, Ohio winner. “The cautions really didn’t bother me. I’d like to thank all of my sponsors.”

Eucker charged ahead of Kevin Robinson on the start for the early lead. Eucker held the top spot for the first five laps before sixth starting Double went under and past Eucker in turn four for the lead on the sixth circuit. Numerous cautions slowed action between laps seven through 13. Double continued to keep Eucker at bay until lap 12 when Eucker retook the lead.

The two went at it over the final laps, but Eucker had just enough to hold on over Double by just 0.134 of a second in the Matt Eucker-owned, Tom’s Sewer & Drain/Ohio Commerce Center/Dr. John Eucker/Damon Race Engines/Altitude Adjustment/Danski Dyno & Performance/Close Racing Supply-sponsored #64. Jace Ferringer was a season best third. Jodi Woodworth, Sr. came from 11th to place third for his best finish as well. Rookie Ty Rhoades continues to be consistent finishing fifth for his fifth straight top five! Heat winners were Burns, point leader Ryan Fraley, and Rhoades.

Rookie Travis Creech came out on top of a wild Mini Stock feature for his third win of the year in the 12-lap Deforest Used Parts main. “I didn’t know what was going on behind me,” expressed the 25-yeard-old Niles, Ohio resident. “The car stated missing after lap three. I figured the 77-car was going to get me because I was done, but then it cleared up and started running again. I just tried to hold down the outside. Once it gets on the outside it’s hard to beat.”

Creech started fifth and was up to third after one lap. Creech passed Steve Walker II for runner-up on lap two then went after leader Dylan Goodman. The newcomer Goodman led the first four laps until Creech made the winning pass on a restart on lap five. Creech went unchallenged in his May’s Towing/Elite Coleman Sales-sponsored #75T to the win.

Tim McAninch inherited second on lap seven when Scott Gilliland got into Goodman. McAninch held down the second spot to the finish for his best finish. Point leader Gilliland came from the tail to finish third over newcomer Dale Fraschetti and 12th starting Jim Haefke, Jr. Bill Fuchs got upside down, but he was okay. Heat wins were collected by Gilliland and McAninch over the season-high 17-car field.

Governor Insurance Agency DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds (20 laps): 1.
Mike Marlar overtook race leader, Don O’Neal with nine laps to go to take the $20,000 to win “Clash at the Mag” Presented by the Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau on Saturday Night at Magnolia Motor Speedway. Marlar’s first Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of the season was hard earned as a caution with 12 laps to go set up a great finish.

Marlar, in his first weekend piloting a Bloomquist Race Car led to the checkers holding off O’Neal and John Blankenship for his fifth career LOLMDS victory. Point’s leader, Jimmy Owens, who started 12th, came home in fourth followed by 17th starting, Randy Weaver.

“When I saw the caution come out, I got down in some dry dirt on the bottom of the track, and then I had to clean my tires off really good for the restart,” said Marlar. “It was good to have one more shot at it there at the end, I lined up beside Blankenship for the restart, and my car took off really well up top, and it only took us a few laps to get by O’Neal. They had an awesome race track here tonight, we have always enjoyed coming down here to Mississippi to race, and they have a lot of great fans here.”

“I really wish Norman Bryson could’ve be here tonight! He is on a mission trip in Honduras. I am still getting used to this new car, it turns differently than what I am used to driving. I also want to thank the Lucas Oil Series for the tire rule this weekend, we’ve finally gotten used to it. It saved us a bunch of money to come down here.”

“I have to thank all my great sponsors, Convenient Lube, Midwest Sheet Metal, Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, Currin Construction, VP, Clements Racing Engines and Keyser.”

O’Neal looked like the car to beat all night as he withstood challenges from Marlar and Blankenship for the first half of the race. O’Neal who won this race last year was trying to end a streak of bad luck in the LOLMDS where he had not finished the last two events. The caution with 12 laps remaining while O’Neal had built up a good lead over Blankenship and Marlar set up a finish that O’Neal did not want to see.

“No we didn’t need that caution, our car was good all weekend, to run 100 laps here tonight, we thought tire wear was going to be a factor, but it was not, congrats to Mikey on the win, the way the last few weeks had went we needed a good finish and we got it,” said the driver of the Optima Batteries/MasterSbilt House Car Chevrolet.

Blankenship, who continues to cut into Jimmy Owen’s point’s leader, had another solid finish. “”We didn’t need that caution either, we were slowly catching Don, I don’t know if I could have ever passed though, the track was real racy all night, my car was better on the bottom, his (O’Neal) car was better getting into the corners, we were a tick better off the turns, it would have been real interesting in those final laps if not for the caution,” said the driver of the Coal World’s Energy, Rocket Chassis.

Completing the top ten were Billy Moyer, Jared Landers, Billy Moyer, Jr., Chris Wall and Steve Francis.

In preliminary action, Don O’Neal set the overall time (Group A) amongst the 46 entrants, with a lap of 14.077 seconds. Steve Francis set the fastest time in Group B with a time of 14.223 seconds. Don O’Neal, David Breazeale, John Blankenship, and Mike Marlar won their respective heat races. Randy Weaver and Eric Cooley won their respective B-Mains.

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will be making three stops next weekend, beginning on Thursday, June 20th, at Swainsboro Raceway in Swainsboro, GA. On Friday, June 21st, the series will make its only stop in the Carolinas at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, SC. Rounding out the weekend, the series heads into the Blue Ridge Mountains to Wythe Raceway in Rural Retreat, VA on Saturday, June 22nd. Twenty one year old Michael Norris may have never had the opportunity to see Western PA legend Herb Scott in action but the Sarver, PA driver’s domination of the Inaugural Herb Scott Memorial presented by K&N Performance highlighted the racing action at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway on Saturday, June 15th. In addition to Norris, veteran Rick Aukland, who also has a Pittsburgher victory on his resume scored his first ever E-Mod win as the Renegade Series made their first ever appearance at the speedway. Other winners included Andrew Wylie (Precise Racing Products RUSH Pro-Late Models), Jeff Broniszewski (Sunoco Race Fuels Late Model Sportsman), Christian Schneider (Miley BP Car Wash Hobby Stocks) and Dylan Bolind (Imperial Heights garage Young Guns).

Third generation racer Michael Norris captured the biggest victory of his career as he dominated the 40 lap Herb Scott Memorial event. The Sarver, PA driver started on the pole of main event and immediately took command. Norris was never challenged for the top spot and when the checkered flag waved he had lapped all but the top five finishers. “I need to thank my dad, my family and my entire crew for all of their hard work this week. In addition, Gary Henry did a great job getting this motor rebuilt so that we could race this evening. I sincerely appreciate their efforts this week and it’s an honor to win the inaugural Herb Scott Memorial,” stated a very elated Norris. Alex Ferree, Keith Barbara, Brandon Burgoon and Donnie Moran completed the top five.

Moran and Daryl Charlier captured the heat race wins while Norris was victorious in the six lap Fast Dash. Burgoon set the fast time for the 21 car field with a lap of 19.793.

Saltsburg, PA driver Andrew Wylie made his first appearance of the 2013 season at the Imperial, PA oval a successful one as he scored his first ever win at the speedway. Wylie led the entire distance of the 20 lap main event to defeat Justin Lamb, who had his best finish of 2013, Tommy Schirnhofer, Josh Holtgraver and Mark Moats, Jr.

Wylie and Dennis Neiderriter captured the wins in heat race action.

The Renegade E-Mod Series made their first appearance at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway with veteran Rick Aukland getting the victory over Kevin Morehouse, Michael Davis, Scott Strickler and Travis Dickson. Michael Davis led the first ten circuits of the 20 lap main event before Aukland took over the top spot on the 11th circuit. Aukland went on to lead the remainder of the non-stop feature event to score his first ever E-Mod victory at the speedway. Kevin Morehouse, Davis, Scott Strickler and Travis Dickson completed the top five.

Davis, Strickler and Corey Conley picked up the heat race wins in preliminary action while R.J. Otto won the B-Main. Davis also set the fast time for evening at 21.62.

Ed Laboon Memorial winner Jeff Broniszewski returned to action at “Dirt’s Monster Half Mile” and picked up his third win of the season as he led the feature event ‘wire to wire.” Bill Robertson finished in the second spot followed by Joey Koteles, Vince Laboon and Nick Kocuba.

Broniszewski also captured the win in the Late Model Sportsman prelim.

Hannah Ramsey and Dan Black led the Hobby Stock drivers to the green flag with Black leading the first two circuits with Ramsey, Chase Evans and Christian Schneider battling for the second spot. Ramsey bested the gentleman to lead the third circuit but she slipped high on the next lap and that allowed Schneider to take over the top spot. Schneider went on to lead the remainder of the 12 lap event and claim his seventh win of the season over Chase Evans, Ramsey, newcomer Joe Ballough and Black.

Schneider also scored the heat race victory.

Dylan Bolind continued his dominance of the Young Guns Division as the Imperial, PA teenager scored his fifth consecutive victory. O.B. Huff and Karlee Kovacs led the field to the green flag with Kovacs taking the top spot for the first two circuits. Kovacs went high in turn four and that allowed Bolind to move into the lead and cruise to the win. Huff finished in the runner-up spot followed by Kovacs, Roman O’Neill and Courtney Chamberlain.

For most World of Outlaws Late Model Series regulars, the national tour’s inaugural event at Fonda Speedway on Wednesday night (June 19) represents a trip to a track well off the full-fender division’s beaten path.

But for Tim McCreadie and Tim Fuller, the race means so much more.

As natives of upstate New York whose racing roots lie in the Northeast’s Big-Block Modified class, McCreadie and Fuller understand the significance of the half-mile oval known as ‘The Track of Champions.’ With the speedway oozing six decades worth of Modified history, Fonda is hallowed ground for racers like them.

“It’s just one of those places where so many great Modified drivers have run over the years,” said Watertown, N.Y.’s Fuller, who developed into one of DIRTcar Big-Block Modified racing’s top stars before switching his focus to the WoO LMS in 2007. “If you drive a Modified, you know about Fonda Speedway. Every Modified driver would like to win a race there.”

Neither Fuller, 45, nor McCreadie, 39 and also from Watertown, N.Y., have ever been Big-Block Modified regulars at Fonda. But both have entered numerous specials there throughout their careers, including several in recent seasons while moonlighting behind the wheel of Modifieds during breaks in the WoO LMS schedule.

McCreadie has enjoyed the most Fonda success of the pair. He owns two career Big-Block Modified triumphs at the track: a Super DIRTcar Series score a decade ago and, most recently, a checkered flag in April 2004 driving his Sweeteners Plus teammate Vic Coffey’s Modified. Three years ago, in Fonda’s 2010 season finale, he finished second in a 100-lapper to Stewart Friesen, the Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., native and defending Fonda Speedway Big-Block Modified champion who is scheduled to make his dirt Late Model driving debut on Wednesday night in a car fielded by WoO LMS veteran Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa.

“I probably haven’t run more than 15 or 20 total races there but I’ve usually run good,” said McCreadie, who followed the WoO LMS for the first time in 2004 (winning Rookie of the Year honors), led the tour in A-Main wins in ’05 and captured the championship in ’06. “It means a lot to win there, to stand on that Checkeredboard Square (in Victory Lane). My dad (Big-Block Modified legend ‘Barefoot’ Bob McCreadie) won some big races there so it was cool when I finally got a win there too.”

McCreadie has paid enough visits to Fonda to become familiar with the track’s quirks, including the curved back straightaway that runs parallel with the Mohawk River.

“It has a big, sweeping backstretch,” described McCreadie. “It’s basically one long, sweeping corner down the backstretch, so you carry a lot of speed through (turns) three and four. It races a little bit like Merrittville (Speedway in Thorold, Ont.) the way the backstretch is shaped. Fonda is bigger the surface is different, but, just like at Merrittville, you don’t really lift until you get to the exit of (turn) four.

“That backstretch makes the car handle a little different,” he added. “I’m not sure how one of these Late Models will handle through there, so it’ll be interesting.”

The wrinkle for McCreadie entering Wednesday night’s 50-lap, $10,000-to-win WoO LMS affair is that he’s never run a dirt Late Model at Fonda. He’s heard some positive words about full-fender racing at Fonda, however, from such pals as Caledonia, N.Y.’s Coffey and Big-Block Modified star Billy Decker of Unadilla, N.Y., both of whom have dirt Late Model experience there in Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series events. Coffey finished second in the 2010 race and Decker recorded finishes of fifth (’10) and 17th (’11).

Coffey, Decker and Decker’s Gypsum Racing teammate and fellow Big-Block Modified regular, Larry Wight of Phoenix, N.Y., all plan to enter Wednesday night’s WoO LMS event.

“Vic said the Late Models were real quick there and they raced all over it,” said McCreadie. “That’s really all we always hope for. When that’s the case, the racing will be good.”

Fuller doesn’t have a Big-Block Modified victory at Fonda on his resume, but he’s been close. (Most notably, he remembers running out of gas while leading late in the Fonda 200 one year.) He’s also made enough Fonda starts to realize what lies ahead for him Wednesday night.

“I’ve always liked Fonda,” said Fuller. “It’s easy to drive when (the surface is) heavy, but when it gets slippery there’s a special knack to getting around that place. Guys like (Fonda Big-Block Modified standouts) Jack Johnson and Bobby Varin, they grew up there and they have that knack.

“It’s basically just a big circle, so it’s all about momentum there. The line will be on the bottom for a while, then it’ll go to the top – it just goes back-and-forth. That’s why it’s always pretty racy.”

Both McCreadie and Fuller and glad to see Fonda on the WoO LMS schedule.

“I always like being close to home and racing for good money,” said McCreadie, who entersWednesday night’s action ranked sixth in the WoO LMS points standings with two A-Main victories to his credit this season. “It’s nice to see Fonda (promoter Ric Lucia) stepping up to the plate and having a big Late Model show.”

Fuller, who sits fifth in the circuit points standings, is hopeful that his familiarity with Fonda will help propel him to a much-needed triumph on the WoO LMS. When he takes to the Fonda oval, his winless streak on the tour will have gone past three years.

“I need a win bad,” said Fuller, who is winless in his last 116 WoO LMS races since grabbing the checkered flag on June 17, 2010, at Merrittville Speedway. “Maybe racing close to home will be what we need to get back into Victory Lane.”

Among the 11 WoO LMS regulars, only two other drivers share prior Fonda experience with McCreadie and Fuller. Rookie Eric Wells of Hazard, Ky., competed in both of the track’s Lucas Oil Series event (he finished 14th in ’10 and 19th in ’11) and Bub McCool of Vicksburg, Miss., placed 10 th in the 2011 race.

Outlaws who will make first-ever visits to Fonda include Frank; points leader Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va.; defending champion Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky.; Shane Clanton of Zebulon, Ga., whose four victories this season ties him with Lanigan for the series lead in the category; 2011 champion Rick Eckert of York, Pa.; Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga.; and rookie Morgan Bagley of Longview, Texas.

Pit gates for Wednesday’s program, which also includes a 30-lap, $3,000-to-win feature for the Big-Block Modifieds, will open at 4 p.m. and spectator gates at 5 p.m. Racing is scheduled to get the green flag at 7 p.m.

General admission is $30. Tickets for children ages 6-11 are $3 and kids 5-and-under will be admitted free of charge.

Moler Raceway Park kicked off Father’s day weekend with an extra class of cars as the Pure Stock division made its return plus some mechanics races at end the end of the night. In the Late Model division it was a battle of all-time feature winners at the track as Lawrenceburg, Indiana’s Jason Jamison would win heat #1 with a late race pass on Roger Ruark of Flemingsburg, KY. In heat race #2 it was Edinburgh, Indiana’s Chad Stapleton taking the win and earning a front row starting spot.

In the feature it was Stapleton out front at the green flag but Jamison was right on his bumper as the two traded slide jobs in the corners for the first few laps. Jamison appear to take the top spot on lap 12 but a caution for the spun machine of Ruark took the field to the last completed lap and Stapleton would be positioned back up front. On the restart Jamison would make the pass stick and roll on to his first win at MRP for the 2013 race season in the Lanigan Autosport, Keyser Manufacturing, Bert Transmission, Club 29 machine. Stapleton would come home second with Bill Sheets, Marty Oneal, and Ethan Burgess rounding out the top five.

In the UMP modifieds it looked as if Hanover, Indiana’s Joey Kramer may make it 2 in a row as he had the lead early in his Lightning Chassis machine but on a lap 7 restart it was Aurora Indiana’s Matt Hamilton who would slide by and runaway for his first win of 2013 at MRP in his Schmoe’s Collision, Sign-A-Rama, JTS Enterprises, OTS sponsored machine. Kramer would come home second with Jimmie Lennox Jr, Larry Pickelheimer Jr and Michael Poe rounded out the top five. Kramer and Hamilton won heat races.

In the Chevette Division it was Josh Francis and Rusty Yarger winning heat races and setting the lineup fr the fifteen lap feature event. At the green it was defending track champion Yarger out front with Francis and Miles Tarvin in pursuit. As the race wore on Tarvin would get passed Francis for second and would put pressure on Yarger out front but couldn’t quite make a pass stick. In the end it was Yarger in his Wilson Body shop machine winning his fourth feature of the season with Miles Tarvin coming home second with Kyle Tarvin, Jim Hunt and Spensor Watson rounding out top five.

In the first Pure Stock races held in four years there was a nice field of 13 cars on hand to put on a show. In the heat race action it was Sean Thomas and Brandon Gibson putting on the show in the first heat with Gibson coming out the victor while in heat # 2 it was Jimmy Block and Tim Brearton racing hard for the win with Block taking the checkers. In the feature it was Gibson in the Brewer Auto Body, Willies Decal, Cozine Auto Repair sponsored machine out front at the green and he would never be seriously challenged as he would take his first ever MRP checkered flag. Block would come home second with Brearton, Jordan Hedger and Rick Zimmerman completing the top five spots.

In the Compact division it was a Rex Smith Jr kinda night as the Bainbridge, Ohio driver would take the win in the heat and feature event in his first night out this season. Driving a borrowed car because his wasn’t complete the form King of Compact victor would charge through the field in his heat for the win and take advantage of his pole starting spot in the feature to claim another feature win at MRP in his Smith Bros Racing Bainbridge Laundry sponsored machine. Dillan Harris would claim his career best finish coming home in second spot ahead of Justin Dalton, Jerry Gibson III, and Kevin Stamper.

Mother Nature would finally cooperate and Ponderosa Speedway would get to present the 3rd Annual Weekend Warrior 30 for the D&D Pallet Recyclers Sportsman division and Glen Hounshell, Jr. of Mount Vernon, KY would take the win and an $800 payday. Other feature event winners for the evening would include Brad Neat of Dunnville, KY in Good Neighbor Pharmacy Super Late Models, Bryan Barber of Greensburg, KY in Bluegrass Drug Store Modifieds, Todd Coffman of Junction City, KY in Smith Automotive Machine Shop FASTRAK Late Models, and Charles Burton of Somerset, KY in Airport Road Salvage Yard Four Cylinders.

Glen Hounshell, Jr. would take the lead at the start of the 3rd Annual Weekend Warrior 30 and survive a pair of late race caution flags and grab the $800 payday to become the third different winner of this event after leading all 30 laps to gain the win aboard his Wayne Bowen Racing Supply/R&R Builders/ Madison Windows/Lanham Scrap and Metal/Jennings Do It Best Home Center/V.C. Mall top qualifier at 16.088 seconds, while Northside RV heat race wins went to Hounshell, Jr., Bottoms, and Sullivan.

Dustin Linville would lead the first 16 laps of the 25 lap Good Neighbor Pharmacy Super Late Model main event until a tangle with a slower would draw the caution flag and track official deemed Linville to be at fault for spinning the slower car and would have to restart at the rear and Victor Lee, who was running second at the time, clipped part of the incident and would pit with a flat right-rear tire. This turn of events would put Brad Neat at the point and he would lead the remainder of the way to pick up the win behind the wheel of the Tim Logan owned Tim Logan Racing/All Star Performance/5150 Trailers sponsored #11 Barry Wright Race Car powered by a Jay Dickens Race Engine. Older brother Dustin Neat would finish second, followed by Justin Rattliff, David Webb, and Mike Strunk. Jeff Watson would head up the second five at the finish, with Linville driving back to seventh, followed by Lee would returned with a new right-rear tire, Jay Mobley, and Johnny Wheeler. Fourteen entries saw Brad Neat as the Bob Allen Motor Mall top qualifier at 13.892 seconds, with the Country 100.9 MIKE FM heat races going to Linville and Lee.

Bryan Barber would take the lead at Motorsports/Bilstein Shocks/All Star Performance/Maximum Energy Development/Hypercoils/Frankland Racing Equipment sponsored #10 Bandit Race Car powered by a Jay Dickens Race Rocky Wilson, and Cy Cundiff. Nineteen entries would see Barber also be the Bob Allen Motor Mall top qualifier at 14.831 seconds, while Inter County Energy heat victories fell to Barber, England, and Despain.

Todd Coffman would continue his dominance in the Smith Automotive Machine Shop FASTRAK Late Model division as he scored his fourth victory of the season by leading all 20 laps of the main event in the Sharon Coffman owned Premier Self Storage/Auto Connection/Muffler Shop/AllStar Racewear/ Spears Construction/Coffman’s Photography/Archie’s Tire Center/Harrod Farms/Todd’s Body Shop/ Wilson Equipment sponsored #35 Rocket Chassis. Zane Powell would take second, while Gary Yeager rolled home third, with Cole Bland and Jake Henry finishing fourth and fifth. Seven entries saw Coffman be the Bob Allen Motor Mall top qualifier at 14.679 seconds and Coffman also won the Colston Paving heat.

Charles Burton of Somerset, KY would lead the entire way in claiming the Airport Road Salvage Yard Four Cylinder feature aboard his D&M Muffler/Lake Cumberland Thrift Store/Delaney Engineering sponsored #1B. Adam Gregory would finish second, as there were only two cars signed in for the class and it was announced that the division will no longer be in competition after this event, since the car count has not grown in numbers.

SUMMARY-Ponderosa Speedway-Junction City, Kentucky-June
